Football in the fifties…

Posted in Uncategorized at 2:31 pm by Aleksan

It’s strange to think that in the 50s, between 2.30 and 4pm, at this time of the year, I was playing Football. Whatever the weather I wore either a light blue or dark blue shirt, and had to run about to keep warm. We used a laced up brown leather ball, and on my feet were my boots, with evil looking leather studs nailed to the soles.

I was slightly built and could run fast, and my favourite position was right wing. Sometimes I would get very cold waiting for some sort of action to come my way. When it did I tore down the right wing and centred the ball ready for someone to kick it into goal – a rare event.

After games we had hot showers and warmed up before lessons began again at 4.30. It was assumed that healthy bodies made healthy minds, a concept we never questioned. The Masters were the refs, and generally speaking did a good job.

Today, thinking back to those energetic days, I smile, shudder and pull a blanket over my torso – it is still me, but I now manifest in a different way, an older way, and instead of running fast I seem to have adopted the posture of someone stuffed by an incompetent taxidermist.
