Tea with Auntie Annie
They don’t make Maiden Aunts like they used to. When I was young they were an essential part of the family. Auntie Annie was my sister Isobel’s Godmother, and spoke with a lovely Devon accent. There were three pretty sisters at one time but two died of Tuberculosis (TB) – only Annie survived.
Auntie Annie used to invite us kids to Tea, and what a splendid affair it was! We all wore clean and tidy clothes for a change, and there was always a new shining penny on all the children’s plates (proper old fashioned big pennies mind), nice sandwiches, biscuits with animals in icing on them, and cakes.
Afterwards we played with her very special set of wooden bricks which came in all sorts of wonderful shapes. What a treat those Teas were – homage to Auntie Annie and Maiden Aunts everywhere!
