A knob of chocolate in the 1950s

It’s after dinner in the farmhouse kitchen at Hazeldown,and Dad, wearing his long brown apron has washed up. He has put the scraps into a square enamel dish and given them to Jock, the dog, outside. He puts his head down on his hands for “forty winks” before going back to afternoon work.

Mum smiles and reaches up to the top of the kitchen cupboard – she has in her hand a bar of Cadbury’s chocolate. This is a treat, and not something that happens very often – we kids look on with pleasure. “Who would like a knob of chocolate?” We come to her and get a knob each, it melts in my mouth and I feel very happy. I always remember this when I have a knob of chocolate, but now it’s up to me I have two, three or four knobs – sometimes more…
