Doves coo-img and Woodpecker drumming – a mild and early Spring is prophesied

Posted in Uncategorized at 9:15 am by Aleksan

From Old Burnfield’s Weather Almanac Jan 26th in the year 2020. I ventured forth on a mild morning, but damp in the air. A golden slash of light in the East, patchy clouds. I heard the coo-ing of a Dove, and also the early drumming of a Woodpecker. The wind was still. The Snowdrops well advanced and diverse Spring flowers, early Daffadowndillies, Winter Aconites, small blue Iris, Lenten Roses and Viburnums all out. A spell of rain is due today, but my forecast for the Spring is an early, dry and mild one, with occasional night frosts.

History Lesson

Posted in Uncategorized at 3:49 pm by Aleksan

The people of the first part of the 21st century were technologically rich and weaponised to a high degree. Society was theoretically democratic but in practice Leaders of the major powers behaved like dictators, listening only to the rich and powerful.

These leaders had a poor understanding of Science and little respect for Scientists, resulting in a denial of land and sea pollution, and the devastating affects of climate change that had been built up over many years of thoughtless exploitation of resources and the pursuit of ever more economic growth.

Young people and the intelligentsia, the University teachers and students, became increasingly disillusioned by an ever more increasingly divided society, and the unfairness of the political system. Mass communication was facilitated by an advanced technology, and people in cities in several countries took matters into their own hands, protesting on the streets and pointing out the Science so far denied by the powerful with vested interests in keeping a corrupt and exploitative system going for their own ends.

Like Joan of Arc before her, a teenage girl together with a very old man, showed the world that the Emperor in fact, had no clothes, and that unless science and evidence were listened to, human Society and much animal and plant life was threatened with Extinction…..the rest is History, and you will know how it all ended, and why we, the few humans that do still exist, live in caves deep beneath the surface of what was once a green and blue World.

USA – a pariah State?

Posted in Uncategorized at 7:53 am by Aleksan

The US Government’s ignorant and selfish views on Climate change and their unjust refusal to extradite the American woman that killed a British man does not bode well for future dealings between our two countries. I would recommend great caution when it comes to negotiating any trade deals with this pariah State. All we can hope for, and this may be a vain hope, is that Trump is not re-elected to dictate for a further four years.

Doctors and their Mistakes

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:46 am by Aleksan

It used to be said that “Doctors don’t make mistakes, they bury them”. Of course we make mistakes like everyone else because like everyone else we are not Gods but mortals. I made mistakes from time to time, like my colleagues, not often because I practiced care and diligence. Medicine is a stressful profession, needing instant decisions with little information sometimes, when we might be exhausted after a long day with little sleep the night before.

There must be honesty about this, understanding and an acceptance that mistakes sometimes happen. The current system of denial and cover up by managers and practitioners is unfair on doctors and patients alike. It’s not surprising that many doctors are unwilling to work in Maternity or General Practice, where a small mistake can be devastating for patients and their families and end a good doctors career.

The system must change – people should be compensated fairly for inevitable human mistakes, dangerous doctors should not be allowed to practice, but the majority of good and caring doctors must be properly valued and protected.

Is the present moment more important than the world of imagination?

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:15 am by Aleksan

How often do any of us really live “in the present moment”. I know I mostly live in my imagination or somewhere outside of my present moment, in a book, in music, in a conversation or in companionship with humans and animals. I learnt to daydream early in life, especially after being sent to Boarding School at age seven.

The present moments there were often tedious, cold, scary, violent or humiliating. I lived much of the time in my own world of Space Travel, Spies and Adventure. Books were my life, where I could be who I liked in many different situations and environments. Mr Wright, our strict but mostly benevolent Headmaster, thought of me as a dreamer, and on one occasion quoted from the Old Testament, seeing me drifting towards him in a school corridor but in my own world – “Behold, the dreamer cometh” – a reference to Joseph, he of the multi-coloured coat, who eventually became the most powerful man in Ancient Egypt.

There is as lot to be said for dreaming, but I am not so enamoured by the present moment – is Mindfulness just another con? I am not either in the present moment,or mindful, writing this, and I believe none the worse for that…

A tale of two Westies, Mac and Sammy

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:15 am by Aleksan

My mum and dad planted a little wood north of the Farmyard the year I was born, mostly firs. Mum always called it “Sandy’s Wood”. I remember chickens living there when I was very young, and the area was scrubby. I was given a Westie puppy, Mac, for my 11th Birthday. I saw him only in school holidays because I was at boarding school, and he adored my dad, excitingly biting his boots when dad came back from somewhere.

I remember, as a child of about 13, placing my hands on his back, shutting my eyes and sending him healing for a sore on his back. He eventually grew old and apparently disappeared.

Many years later, after our dog Jemma had died, I was moved to visit Sandy’s Wood to look for Mac’s remains, directed by an inner voice. I found an old part of a backbone, the Sacrum, which I believed was Mac. I brought it home and buried it in a wild part of the garden at Terstan.

We had no plans to have another dog, but shortly after I had buried the remains of Mac, Penny and I were asked if we would look after another Westie, Sammy for a weekend. He had been given to our daughter Sarah, but did not get on with the small children or her cats. He was not well, and she was also concerned because he was shaking a lot. When he came he was nearly an adult, shaking so much we had to carry him about, and upstairs – but settled quickly. Sarah asked if we would keep Sammy. He is still with us about 13 years later, sleeping on the bed curled up beside me as I write, a magical dog, a great Soul. Sometimes I wonder if Sammy was, in a former life, my little dog Mac?
