The Migrant Crisis – how can we best respond?

I have been listening to any Questions and Any Answers on the Radio, dominated by the issue of the migrant crisis. There were a spectrum of views ranging between “Charity begins at home – first sort our failing NHS and Housing” to we must “Act with compassion and accept all comers” Humans beings are driven by emotion rather than intelligence but few consider the whole picture and how fickle people and emotions are. I am sickened by the political point scoring going on using these desperate people as pawns in party political arguments. There is a danger in all this of communities, social groups and countries blaming each other and making the situation worse. There is clearly no obvious solution but I believe we must all use both hearts and brains to firstly deal with the current humanitarian crisis and secondly to unite across all boundaries and deal with the causes. This problem may in the long term be ameliorated by politicians, but it has recurred throughout history and will continue to recur. Just at the moment it is we, ordinary people of all ages and backgrounds, who must take the initiative in our immediate residential communities or working environments. We may not be able to change the world but we can all make a difference that may help people in need to a greater or lesser extent. So let’s get on with it and back those Charity and other projects here and now as they spring up in our towns, villages or working networks. We have been given much in the UK – and we have the capacity to give much to others as a result.
